An introduction to invitational education

Why we need a framework for systemic school change

We spend more than 1400 hours a year in school. That fact alone, should lead us to be curious about how our own words and actions are influencing others. Are we telling our students and colleagues that they are a person of little worth or ability, or, are we intentionally messaging them that we see their unique talents and invite them to consider actions that will help them develop their strengths? With every word, facial expression, and action we choose, we are actually helping to create one another.

Invitational Education is  a simple yet profound framework for creating a shared mindset and way of communicating that messages others that we believe they are able, valuable, and responsible and we are committed to treating them accordingly.  When schools involve all staff in learning about Invitational Education and begin to put the theory into practice, everyone is lifted up by the care, optimism, respect and trust they are receiving.  Their interest in applying an inviting, "doing with" approach to every aspect of their school grows exponentially.

Your guide to creating schools where people want to teach and learn.

Why use an Invitational Framework for school success?

New Book: Developing Inviting Schools

Joan introduces the latest book on Invitational Education. Learn how our words and actions influence what others believe to be true about themselves , and why it's important to establish an invitational framework to insure that your school climate efforts will succeed. Developing Inviting Schools is a deep dive into what Invitational Education is, why it is needed, and how it has been put into practice in schools around the world.

Meet the Creators of Invitational Education

Dr. William W. Purkey created Invitational Theory & Practice with significant contributions from Dr. John M. Novak.  Along with  Dr. Betty Siegel, Purkey co-founded the International Alliance for Invitational Education (IAIE) in 1982.  In this 2007 video, these 3 vibrant IE Leaders share  perspectives on a journey that has invited over 400 schools world-wide to create places where everyone is seen as able, valuable, and responsible and treated accordingly.
