The greatest influence on school climate lies in the words and actions of our staff members. The success of every school climate initiative depends on how our our adults are expressing their feelings and needs without blame or judgment, and learning to listen for and identify the needs of others.
The term “SEL” is often attached to anything that schools try to do that is positive. The reason not much is accomplished this way, is that SEL is not that. SEL refers to teaching social and emotional SKILLS in a sequential, developmental order, every year, to every student, in every grade.
Instead of punishment and exclusionary practices, a collaborative and optimistic approach to addressing inappropriate behavior starts with the premise that people want to be accepted and do better – if only they knew how. They are lacking the skills to do so. How can we help?
Joan explains why starting with staff communication skills will help all of your school climate initiatives succeed.
